How to create a link for customers to review your business on Google My Business.

It goes without saying reviews are extremely important for small businesses, more important than they have ever been. Reviews are one of the key factors’ customers look at when deciding which business to choose.

Google reviews are very important.

Even if a majority of your work comes from word of mouth, don’t be fooled into thinking you online reputation doesn’t matter. It absolutely does… When someone recommends your company, one of the first things they are going to do is google your business name. Whether they are simply looking for your number, or just looking to see some of your work on your website, you need to make sure that they see that you are a highly rated company.

Google reviews are more than likely the first reviews a customer is going to see when they google your business name. On a desktop your google my business listing, where your reviews are show is on the right-hand side of the page. On a mobile device such as a phone, your Google My Business listing is going to take up most of the screen when someone googles your business name.

For obvious reasons, having a bunch of reviews there is going to show your potential customer, that you are a good business. Afterall a company with a tonne of 5-star reviews, it surely better than a company with no reviews at all? Think about your last shopping trip on Amazon, how did the reviews influence your purchases?

The Problem with Google reviews.

The main issue business owners have is getting actually Google reviews. In an ideal world, customers would be 100% computer literate and know exactly how to; Google your business name, click on your Google My Business listing, find the small box half way down the page that reads “Write a review”, and then finally write you a review. And all of that still assumes that they have a google account!

Making it easier for your customers to review you on Google

As with most things in life, the easier something is, the more likely you are to do it. People act a lot like water in that respect, they will generally take the path of least resistance.

One of the best ways to make it easier for your customers to review you on Google My Business, is to send them a link that will take them directly to your Google My Business listing, and automatically open the review window. Doing this will allow them to simply click the link and write the review.

How to create the link to your businesses Google review window

STEP 1

Firstly, you need to find out your business’s Place ID… I’m going to assume you don’t know this off the top of your head, so here’s how to find it:

Go to the Google Places API:
Visit Google Places API

STEP 2

Then on the map, type in your business name and select your business from the list that appears.

STEP 3

You will then be presented with a map that includes a pin on your business.

Copy the letters and numbers after “Place ID”

STEP 4

Now that you have your “Place ID” paste it somewhere safe, perhaps in a word doc.

STEP 5

Now, you will need to copy this URL and put it with your Place ID in your word doc:
https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=YOUR-PLACE-ID

STEP 6

Now replace “YOUR-PLACE-ID” in the URL with your Place ID. You will have a link that looks like this:
https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=ChIJ1VlMH9PM2EcRGLTuqNhaTEo

STEP 7

Now you can test out your newly created link. Simply copy the link and paste it into your browser.

You should be presented with something that looks like this:

STEP 8

You can now send this link to your customers asking them to leave you a review on google.

When to ask for a Google Review

For past customers, you can write an email explaining how important word of mouth is to your business and how important reviews are to you etc. etc. You can then include the link in that email.

Going forward, you can also include the link when you send invoices by email (if you send invoices by email).

It’s not perfect, but it’s better…

This technique is about the best option you will find for getting more Google Reviews for your business. However, its not perfect. Unfortunately, or fortunately dependant on your standpoint, “reviewers” will still need to be logged in to their google account to create you a review. Luckily, a good percentage of people already have an account. If a user does not have an account, it is luckily quite a simple process to create their account and continue to write your review.
